What Is A Doula?

A doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth. The doula’s purpose is to help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience.

What We Do For You

Childbirth can be a complex time for women and the needs of each woman are very different during labor. As doulas, our place is to offer support in a way that allows for the most enjoyable birth experience possible. Does this mean we can make it rain glitter and unicorns? Unfortunately not BUT, what we can do, is meet with you ahead of time to discuss and prepare a realistic vision of how you would like your birth to be. Because birth can be wildly unpredictable, we want to provide you with the education and resources to feel well prepared and excited for the birth experience that you will have.

Whether you are having a natural home birth or a planned caesarean, we will be there to support you through it all.

Meet Your Doulas

Becoming a doula was a thought that had passed through my mind for some time and, as I explored this idea a little deeper and became educated on the role of a doula, the more I felt that this was something that I needed to be a part of.  But, it wasn’t until the birth of my second daughter that I could truly appreciate the place a doula has in the birthing experience and, after a very lengthy heart to heart with my doula partner and bestie Jenn, the decision to become a doula was solidified.  The passion that I bring as a doula is driven by my desire to be that unconditional presence to mothers and their families during an extremely vulnerable and intimate yet exciting and empowering moment in their lives. I offer educational, emotional and physical support (i.e. a little bit of massage and just the right amount of squeeze goes a long way to help ease those contractions) to encourage moms and their families through the journey of becoming a parent whether it’s their first or seventh time!

My doula journey started when my niece was born in 2011. I was living in Toronto at the time and my bestie/doula partner was in Montreal. That morning I got THE call at 5am, I jumped in my car and drove home to Montreal to be there for her and to meet this little princess we had all waited 9 months to meet. Once I arrived at the hospital and we eventually got a room, the work began, making sure she had everything she needed and that both her and her husband got as much rest as possible. I made sure her Jell-O cravings were fulfilled, she always had water and her feet were never cold. I laughed with her and watched the monitors while she slept and 26 hours later my niece was born and it was the most amazing experience I had ever had. That day, a doula was born.

Jen & Vanessa were amazing. I couldn’t imagine going through my labor without them. They both are very passionate, reliable, caring and always ensuring they have your back! They followed up with me during my pregnancy to make sure all my questions and concerns were addressed. When I went into labor they came to the house and made sure I was as comfortable as possible. The nurses at the hospital were so impressed by how calm and collected those two were and how they made every step as comfortable as possible for me and my husband. Thank you for a great experience. Will definitely call you both back for baby #2.

Maha Ali

I never considered the possibility that my birth experience would be anything less than magical. I had envisioned a very natural labour and delivery and knew that I would benefit from having the additional support of Blooming Belly Doulas. At 34 weeks, my world shattered beneath me when I was unexpectedly admitted to the hospital with pre-eclampsia. Vanessa and Jenn were at my bedside within an hour and followed me as I was transferred to another hospital. I was kept for monitoring and Vanessa and Jenn were there for me through text, phone calls and informative emails around the clock, offering to visit at the drop of a pin. Two days later, it was decided that it was time to get baby out and I was wheeled back to labour and delivery. Jenn scooped Vanessa up from her hot yoga class and they were by my side as I was being induced. Although my labour only lasted 5 hours before I headed to C-section, these girls were in fact by my side for over 48 hours. They brought so much positivity and comfort to a painful, scary medical event and did such a wonderful job of distracting my husband and I from the negativity and uncertainty that loomed. We are eternally grateful to these wonderful ladies.

Vanessa Panneton

Vanessa and Jennifer are two remarkably compassionate and sincere individuals. Their caring, supportive nature not only makes them wonderful women but also encompasses key traits that I seek in a doula. Their passion and knowledge for helping women feel comfortable and empowered during child labour, one of life’s most miraculous, breathtaking moments, is truly a blessing for those that choose to include them on their birthing journey.

Vanessa and Jennifer understand the intricacies that come with pregnancy, labour and the return home. They can help guide you through the million and one questions that you may be having as to what is “normal” and what isn’t. The best part is that they are real, down to earth women who emphasize with you and who are committed to enhancing your experiences in bringing a child into this world.

If you are considering a doula, reach out to them. You will be refreshed by their kindness, reliability, professionalism but most of all their dedication to offering you exceptional care and support.

“Birth is an opportunity to transcend.

To rise above what we are accustomed to, reach deeper inside ourselves than we are familiar with, and to see not only what we are truly made of, but the strength we can access in and through birth.”

– Marcie Macari

Birth is not only about making babies.

It’s about making mothers; strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and believe in their inner strength.
